The first thing to try would be making some simple changes. The discomfort can often be eased by sitting upright, or lying in a more upright position if you are more affected at night. Many of us think that while pregnant we are “eating for two” but this is actually not the case, it is better to eat little and often and to eat healthily during pregnancy, when the stomach is full it is more likely to cause indigestion so this is a very good incentive to stick to smaller meals! 2. Healthy Eating

Eating healthily should keep your weight gain within the recommended limits, this is especially important for your unborn baby’s healthy but also helps to keep you healthy during pregnancy, overweight pregnant mothers often suffer from health issues, one of which is heartburn. Try to find your triggers, it can be helpful to keep a small food diary and note what you eat and drink and at what times you suffer with heartburn. After a few days you can look back and try and spot any triggers, the most common include; tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, fruit juices, spicy or fatty foods and unfortunately for us chocolate!

3. Gaviscon

If you’ve given those changes a shot and your still suffering, then it’s time to head down to the drug store. Always speak to the pharmacist before buying any medication during pregnancy, they are a mine of useful information, and will tell you what’s safe or unsafe for you and your baby.

Most of the Gaviscon liquid formulation products are safe, however the tablets aren’t recommended during pregnancy. So unfortunately that means carrying the bottle around rather than a few little tablets, but better than suffering without it! We would suggest trying Gaviscon first. It works by creating a thick coating over the stomach and its contents, this coating prevents any acid from rising up, which is what causes the discomfort we know as heartburn.

If your still suffering from heartburn then go and see your doctor, there are other drugs that they can prescribe that will help get rid of that heartburn. So don’t panic at the first sign of heartburn, try following these simple steps and you should soon be free of any discomfort. Now you know how to get rid of heartburn quickly while pregnant.
